A Great Start to Year 3

We have now completed three weeks in Year 3 and what a smashing start to the year! Here are some pictures of the work we have completed.

We have already finished one unit in Literacy all about cinquains (a 5-lined poem with a certain amount of syllables) Take a look at some of our fantastic work...

We begun by looking at quite well-known cinquains
This was one that a pupil invented all by themselves

In Maths, we have been recapping our understanding of place value and mental addition and subtraction, finishing off with an investigation today.
Can you complete this too?

In R.E, we have begun our unit on understanding sacred texts. We looked at some religious artefacts from both Islam and Christianity and thought about their significance.

We have completed lots more and tomorrow we go on our first CHILL OUT! Photos to follow...

Cultural Diversity Day

On Monday 9th July, the whole school celebrated Cultural Diversity Day. This was an opportunity for pupils to celebrate different countries and cultures around the world and share their knowledge and understanding with each other.

In the morning, each class completed a Maths investigation based on the Indian folktale 'One Grain of Rice.'

This was a story based about a greedy raja who keeps all the rice for himself until one day, a smart village girl is rewarded for her honesty. She decided that for thirty days, the raja must double the amount of rice that she got the day before. Therefore, for day 1 she received 1 grain of rice, day 2 she received 2 grains of rice, day 3 she received 4 grains of rice and so forth.

I think it is fair to say that each class were pretty amazed at how many grains of rice she received in total after thirty days...over 1 billion!

After break, each class created something based on the culture that they had already researched. We had classes using modroc, pastels, watercolours, pasta, pipe-cleaners and PowerPoint to name but a few!

Can you identify which country is shown in each photo?

A not so chilly CHILL OUT!

Today, Year 3 went to Highfield Park to learn orienteering with Helen from Map Runner. We had maps with symbols on and had to navigate around the course. It also incorporated numeracy as we had to use some quick mental addition to make sure we got the correct total!

Her Name is Boudicca! photos and a BIG thank you

A huge congratulations to all of Year 3 who performed brilliantly in their school production of 'Her Name is Boudicca!'

We would also like to extend a massive thanks to Deborah Heath and Barbara Honeyball Young who wrote the play. In addition, Mrs Welland, who made the beautiful backdrop and soldier costumes.

Lastly, thank you to all the parents and carers for providing costumes and ensuring that their child had learnt their lines. Your support has meant a great deal and the children have enjoyed themselves immensely because of it.

Here are some of the photos taken from the big show!
